ST. KILDA BEACH
LIFE SAVING CLUB REVIVED IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY FORMED A meeting of St. Hilda residents, held in the Town Hall last night, decided to revive the defunct St. Hilda Life Saving and Surf Club, and also to form a St. Hilda Beach Improvement Society. There were about twenty-live present, the mayor (Mr R. \\. Hall) presiding. The Mayor said he had felt it his duty, as mayor ot the borough, to do something in connection with the improvement of the beach and in regard to the safeguarding of the people who went surf bathing at St. Hilda. This year young and old had used the beach for bathing more than tor a great numher oi years, feoiuc members or the Kiwi Swimming Club and others had suggested that something should be done to safeguard the lives of the people who went surfing, ft did not matter how safe they considered the beach, there was always a certain element of risk, and life saving appliances should bo provided somehow. He would have liked to have seen a largei attendance at the meeting, but he was sure there would bo Jouud sufficient interest ami sympathy among boys and girls and men and women to admit ot the formation of an improvement societv and a file saving club. Mr Hall went on to say that bo had endeavored to obtain some information in regard lo the delunct life saving chib n't St. Hilda. He understood there was a club in existence up till live oi six years ago. During the club’s operation it purchased or had given to it three sheds which were used for drossini'-, and it also had one reel. Ho hud found that the reel,, which was used on the beach, was at Tomahawk. Mr Joe Pereira, a member of the club, went to live at Tomahawk, and, the club being out of existence, lie was given permission to take the reel to Tomahawk and use it there. If the club were reformed he did not think it would ask that that reel bo brought back. Iho two sheds which wore used lor dressing were now in possession of the Domain Board, which had leased them to the lady who now had refreshment rooms and dressing accommodation theie. Sho took very great care of the swiiutneis property and looked alter the showers. Another shed which had belonged to the club was now used by the caretaker of the “ tip ” for tools. Mr Hall said that any buildings which might bo erected by a now society would have to bo built on the landward side of the sandhills. Mr Hancock, who had done so much lor tho beach, had advised that it would be useless to put any buildings on the sand. There was plenty ot ground, however, on which they could put buildings or make other improvements. So far as the late club was concerned, continued the Mayor, there was a credit balance hold by the treasurer ot £4O, Mr James Dove was the late treasurer, and he had advised the speaker that there was something in the vicinity of £4O standing to the credit of the club. Mr Michael Idour had promised, a donation of £5 towards a hie saving reel or a building or anything the society wanted to spend money on. He felt sure there were -numbers ol citizens who would not only give their interest and support, hut who would also put their hands in their pockets. A speaker asked if, in the event ol the live saving club being re-formed, it would again obtain tho sheds. The Chairman said the Domain Board took possession of tho sheds because there bad been no one in control. The board had called for tenders for letting the sheds. He did not think the board would want to retain the sheds if the club wanted them again. If the club were re-formed, however, he did not think it would bo wise to take the sheds from the person who now had them. The Domain Board had not taken the sheds for any selfish reason, but had taken possession because there was no one in charge of them and because they were going to wreck and ruin. In reply to a question the Chairman said he understood the lease of the sheds was for the season, for one year from November last. Mr Ritchie said he was a member of the old Life Saving Club, the annual subscription to which was 2s 6d. At one time they had two reels on the beach, but as there was no one in charge the children played with them and they became out of order. It was decided to form a St. Hilda Beach Improvement Society and a Life Saving and Surf Club, tnese to be separate bodies. Mr R. Conn was elected as president of the Beach Improvement Society, and Mr T. Rutherford as secretary and treasurer.
The following committee was elected:—Messrs Kettle, R. W. Kali, Garbutt, Lovell, Drumm, and Palmer. It was decided to form a committee in connection with the surf club, it being understood that the committee would meet and appoint a president and other office-bearers. The following committee was formed, with power to add to its number: —Messrs Drumm, Garbutt, B. Hector, Rutherford, H. Palmer, Ritchie, Litolff. W. Boyd, and W. Hamilton. Mr Hector was appointed secretary in the meantime. The wish was expressed that as many members of the old surf club as passible would attend the meeting of the committee next Wednesday. It was also decided to hold a meeting of the Improvement Society on the same day.
