TERRITORIAL NOTES

The . training of Cadets and Territorials is now in full . swing- The former commenced on Monday last, and camps are now the order of the day for the latter. Tho Matarae camp was opened by the 11th Battery from the Southland district, and on Saturday last the 14th Battery took possession, and are at present undergoing a week’s solid work. The Ist Battalion, Otago llegnncnt, commenced drill this week, and the time has been chiefly occupied in making preparations for proceeding to camp next week. All arrangements are well in hand, and Lieutenant-colonel H. E. Barrowclough, D. 5.0., M. 0., officer commanding, has issued a special battalion order setting forth full instructions for entraining of troops. The battalion will proceed to Matarae on Thursday next, and will strike ,camp on the following Thursday morning. It is expected that well over 1,000 men will be under canvas, and leave will be granted only if supported by a medical certificate. Exemption can be granted only by a magistrate. Train arrangements. which are very complete, are as follows: Dunedin Trainees.—“ C ” Company, the pioneer section of headquarters wing, with the Otago University Company (N.Z.M.G.) will proceed to camp on Monday, 20th inst. These companies will parade at Anzac square lacing the railway station on that date, and will entrain on a special troop train. Headquarters wing (less pioneer section), “A” Company, and tho Dunedin platoons of “B” and “D" Companies will parade at Anzac square facing the railway station on Thursday, 23rd inst., and will entrain on a special troop train. Oatnaru Trainees.—“ B ” Company will proceed to Dunedin on the 23rd inst. by train On arrival at Dunedin the company will entrain on a special troop train. These troops will carry with them a ration for their midday meal. Port Chalmers Trainees.—All rank£will parade at the Port Chalmers staj». tion on the 23rd, and will proceed to' Dunedin by train, and will at once entrain on the special troop train in the special carriages provided. Staffsergeant A. T. S- M'Kenzio, N.Z.P.S., will be in charge of the draft. Green Island Trainees.—All ranks will assemble at the Green island station on the 23rd, and will entrain on the special troop train. Staff-sergeant W. H. Baldock, N.Z.P.S., will bo in charge of the draft. Mosgiel Trainees.—All ranks will parade at Mosgiel station on the 23rd, and will proceed to Wingatui by train. At Wingatui they will entrain on the special troop train. Lieutenant T. J. G. Pugh will bo in charge of this draft. The advance party proceeding on Monday next will bo in charge of Captain J. A. Boy. Lieutenant-colonel H. E. Barrowclough, D. 5.0., M.C., will be in charge of the first special, and Major W. H. Widdowson, M.C., of the second special troop train on Thursday. Captain S. G. M'Donald, M.C., has been appointed entraining officer for tho first special troop train, with an n.c.o. detailed from headquarters wing. A baggage guard of one n.c.o. and eight men will be detailed from “A” Company and will report to the entraining officer at tho S.W. corner of the Dunedin railwav station on the 23rd. All Civ”! servants who are on leave without pay or annual leave will take with them a certificate, to that effect from the head of the Government department concerned. Lieutenant L. F. Smith is in charge of the advance party. Attached officers will report to the entraining officer on arrival at the station on Thursday, and will be allotted to carriages by him. A regimental canteen will be open in camp. A camp post office will he established, and all mail should be addressed care of military camp, Matarae. A representative of the Y.M.O.A. will he present in cam]), and will supply a recreational marquee, reading and writing material. A camp concert will bo held, and those in possession of musical instruments, songs, etc., arc requested to bring same to camp. A swimming pool will also he available, and all ranks have been requested to bring bathing costumes. At the conclusion of camp a rear party will remain in camp for three days, while ttic remainder of the unit will be returned to their homes on Thursday, March 1. The programme for tho fourth annual rifle meeting of the XI. Begirnental district has been approved, and will be issued immediately. The meeting will be held at the Pclichet Bay Bangc on Saturday, March 3. ' 'This was formerly a two-days’ meeting, but it has been decided to make it a oneday meeting this year. The programme comprises scries A, B, and C, as follow :

A Series.—.-‘!O3 rilie. Open to Territorials, reservists of the Territorial Force, and Senior Cadets (seventeen years). This series consists of four matches. Match 1, application and snap shooting at 200yds; match 2, application and rapid fire at 300yds; match 3, iron falling plates and moving targets at 200yds; match 4, champion grand and application at 500yds. B Series.—. 22 rillc. Open to Senior Cadets under seventeen years of age, and consists of live matches. Match 1, grouping and application; match 2, snap shooting; match 3, rapid lire; match 4, application on No. 4, miniature target; match 5, Cadet championship. C. Series. —One match each for Vickers, Lewis, and Hotchkiss gun teams, fire with movement. Series A, B, and 0 will carry 66, 87, and 9 prizes respectively, and in addition to these 10 trophies and cups will be awarded. Competitors are expected from all parts of the regimental district, and those desiring it will bo accommodated at the Central Battery. During January two courses of training were held at Burnham for Cadet officers and n.c.o.s. From the 18th to tho 25th night parading Cadets attended, and from the 25th to February 1 secondary school Cadet officers and n.c.o.s carried on. Twelve officers and forty n.c.o.s attended each course. The weather was excellent, and a very comprehensive syllabus was _ carried out with much keenness. During the latter course the camp was visited by the Governor-General and the general officer commanding the New Zealand forces. The following officers in the Otago regimental district have passed examinations entitling them to promotion:—Captains J. MThorson, 0.8. E., S. G. Secular, G. P. Fuwright, and W. H. S. VViddowson, Ist Battalion (0.R.), promoted to the rank of major; Lieutenants R. I. Rutherford (2nd Cadet Battalion). R. S. Orr. W. N. Searle, C. W. Cayzer, G. Swan, M.C.. J. A. MTlroy, C. R. Buss. Ist Battalion (0.R.). and Lieutenant W. R. Christie, Otago Mounted Rifles, promoted to the rank of captain. As a result of the recently-held examination for first appointment to commissions the following n.c.o.s have been promoted to the rank of first" lieutenant :-C.S.M. F. R. Roxall (2nd Cadet Battalion. 0.R.), R.S.M. R. J. M'Gill (Ist Cadet Battalion. 0.R.), Sergeant R. D. B. Paterson (Ist Cadet Battalion. 0.R.), Sergeant T. C. Williams (4th Cadet Battalion. 0.R.), C.S.M. J. F. Thomas (Ist Battalion. Otago Regiment), Sergeants E. E. S. Clarke, R. S. Stewart, M. Smith.G. M'Kinley (Ist Battalion, 0.R.). and I. W. Hardie (Otago Mounted Rifles), Sergeant J. C. M'Farlane (12th Field Battery, N.Z.A.), W. S. Morris (Ist Battalion, Otago Regiment). Major S. ■ G. Secular (Ist Battalion 0.R.) and Captain W. R. Christie 0.M.R.) have been awarded the New Zealand long and efficient service

medal. Captain W. R. Christie. Lieutenant J. A. Aitcheson (0.M.R.), and Bandsman A. li. Toomer (0.R.) have been awarded the New Zealand service medal. Captain T. F. Christian lias been transferred from the reserve of officers to tho Otago Mounted Rifles. Lieutenant H. J. Vial (0.M.R.) and Lieutenant D. J. Sumpter (Ist Battalion) have been transferred to tho reserve of officers. Tho officers of Ist Battalion, 0.R., will hold a mess night at tho Wentworth Tea Booms this evening. Following moss it is tho intention of the commanding officer to explain at tho Officers’ Club the tactical .scheme for tho forthcoming camp and tho 2nd 1/C the regimental moss rules. The commanding officers request that all officers make a special effort to bo present.
