The progressive policy adopted b.v the committee of the local Ratepayers association has been evinced before, in many wavs, and is now again demonstrated by its action in having an additional room added to the hail. Also it lias purchased new a lid up-to-date card tables and trestles. These will no doubt prove an acquisition, and the committee’s action will be greatly appreciated by the Cards Club when it commences its meetings again snoitly. A meeting of the Macandrew Isay Swimming Club was held last Ihuisday, Mr C. Free in the chair. A favorable report on the result of the recent carnival was received and discussed, the committee’s intention to enlarge the arid at the bathing shed, thus giving extra space lor the spectators and better facilities for sun bathing, received consideration. As Mrs S. Ingram, who has been a valued member to the club since its inception, is leaving for Wellington shortly, opportunity was taken to bid her farewell. ■ Mrs Bricked spoke culogistically of Mrs Ingrain s services, and in recognition or these sue was made the recipient of a small presentation. A pleasant social hour followed, during which the following items were contributed: —Mesdames Bucket!, Gibson, and Perritfc (songs), and Mr Bricked (recitation). Now that the crops in the potato competition which was organised last jeai by the Macandrew Bay Orphan Club are ready for digging, the dub held a special meeting to decide final details, the following being present, Messrs n. Chuirock (chairman), Kellett. iman, Hewitt, Sutherland, and ‘Whitburn (secretary). Judges were appointed, and these officials will go the rounds next . Saturday afternoon to dig and classify the potatoes. First prize of one guinea goes to the competitor whose shaw yields the biggest crop, aim the second prize of half a guinea to the next. When the judging is completed the potatoes will be donated to the Anglican Boys’ Home at Anderson’s Bay. The winning crops will be exhibited m the local shops. . Despite the inclement weather, a fair number took advantage of a picnic arranged by the Boating Club for its lady

members and their helpers, to journey to the Portobello lish hatchery last Saturday. Launches conveyed the party to and fro. and nn enjoyable time was spent. ~ Once again a good attendance greeted the Maoris at their dance. Among the attractions was a lucky spot which was won by Miss Burchall and Mr Peterson. East’s Orchestra supplied the music. Messrs Brown and Harbrow and Mrs Douglas playing extras. Mr Tabu officiated as DEC. In the resailed race for local yachts for the Strang Cup, the Betty (H. Rid' dell), holder, boat Agnes (J. Hook) by the narrow margin of two seconds. H. Riddell therefore retains the cup tor another year. Messrs J. M'Domild (chairman), Wilson, Ferguson, Scott, and Milward (secretary) attended the meeting of the School Committee. The Education Board’s offer for the installation of a heating apparatus in the school was accepted, the committee to bear a proportion of the cost. The bank alongside the school gardens overlooking the main road has for a long time caused anxiety to parents, as a fall over this ( would mean a drop of over 30ft, with probably serious consequences. Realising the danger of 1 his, the committee ha's had a fence erected on the cliff top, and a report that this work was completed was received. Advice was to hand that the new head master (Mr R. A. E. Blick), transferred from Fortrose, will commence his duties on March 1, Mr M‘Kay, who has been relieving, therefore returns to town. It is the committee’s desire that Mr Blick should have an opportunity of meeting parents and residents on his arrival, and with this object in view Messrs M'Donald and Milward arc to arrange details for a social evening. Arrangements are completed, for tho annual picnic at Ross Point next Saturto Plenty of conveyances will be available, and, given fine weather, an enjoyable day’s outing is assured.
