CANTERBURY TURF NOTES
(Special to the ‘Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, February 15. In his work at Riccarton yesterday Satrap showed that he had suffered no ill-effects by his two races at Wingatui, and those who supported him at that fixture wfill not desert him in the Midsummer Handicap on Saturday next. ... The two-year-old, First Raid, in Miss L. Doyle’s "stable, galloped attractively at Riccarton yesterday, and can be depended on to run prominently in the Lyttelton Plato on Saturday. Hoylake has been giving every satisfaction in his recent track work, and will be seen to advantage on Saturday, Assurance and Footfall covered nine furlongs in the fair time of Imin 59sec. Assurance held the advantage over his companion at the finish, and showed a vast improvement on his recent track essays. Footfall was not hard ridden, and his effort was quite satisfactory. It is likely that both horses will contest the Midsummer Handicap on Saturday. Assurance will bo ridden by A. Messervy, and Footfall by F. E. Jones. Sir Roy finished slightly better than Margaret Birney at the end of seven furlongs on the plough, run in linin 30 2-ssec. Margaret Birney’s prospects of breaking her long run of failures over longer distances look favorable.
