EDUCATION BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was hold this morning, there being present the chairman (Mr J. Wallace! and Messrs J. Horn, L. Sanderson. J. Mitchell, G. Livingstone, J. Smith, Hon. D. T. Fleming, R. W. Todd, and J. H. Wilkinson. ARCHITEGT’S RECOMMENDATIONS. The architect made the following recommendations : Kensington; The guard rails erected inside the gates will be quite effective, and he recommends that they be so placed at Kensington.—Adopted. Mount Stewart; Teacher’s application for interior renovation, also a porch over the door. Architect asks tor authority to do the necessary repair work, but he does not recommend the porch. —Authority granted. Windsor • Teacher’s application for new tanks at the residence. Architect reports that these are necessary, and the cost will bo about £24.—Application granted. Waknri: Committees application tor renovation of interior of school. Architest reports that this is not by any means an isolated case, as many of the schools require interior renovation; but he is not prepared at present to recommend such work.—Held over. _ Knritane: Teacher’s application lor interior renovation of residence, installation of electric light and hot-water system. Architect asks for authority to do what is necessary. The quotation for the installation of electric light is £ls 6s sd.—Agreed. fct. Clair: The department intimated an additional grant to enable tender being accepted for new infant room, and the committee thanked the board for the prompt manner in which it met their representations in regard to the new room. SCHOOL TREATMENT FOR GOITRE. The Director Division of School Hygiene intimated that it has been decided to discontinue the preventive and curative treatment for goitre carried out in the schools during the last four years. A report upon flic* result of this treatment (which had been generally beneficial) was being drawn up, ami would be published shortly. The public were reminded that iodized salt was now on the market, and its use was recommended in areas where goitre was endemic. Individual sufferers from goitre were advised to seek medical opinion prior to beginning any form of treatment. —It was decided to circularise the school committees accordingly. HARD OF HEARING CHILDREN. The director of the Child Welfare Branch intimated that one of the teachers of the School for Deaf at Sumner (Miss C. U. Williams) would be available shortly to take up duty in Dunedin in charge of the special class for speech defects and hard-of-hearing children. A room at the Normal School would be made available for the class. The letter was received, arrangements to bo made accordingly. SUBSIDIES. Sawyer’s Bay Committee applied for a subsidy for top-dressing asphalt, the estimated cost being £5 15s _ ,6d. — Granted under the usual conditions. The Kaikorni Committee applied for a subsidy for top-dressing asphalt, the total cost being £69 fUs.—Grant to be made, subject to the architect being satisfied the work must be done. WORKS REPORT. The architect (Mr J. Rodger) reported upon the work of the past month :—Caversham ; Addition to school now almost finished. The contractor has given quite a satisfactory job, and his work compares very favorably with that of the original contract. St. Clair: Addition to school. The contractor has made a start upon the work, and is getting material on to the site.
