BEAUTIFUL WHEARE FLAT
MEANS DF ACCESS DISCUSSED Some time was taken up at last evening’s meeting of the Otago Motor Club in discussing matters bearing on road and bridge improvements on the route to Whare Elat. Mr W. Wright brought the subject up by stating that the club was mainly instrumental in , getting the Taieri County Council to put a ford over the Silver-stream. He understood that the Government had allocated a sum of money for putting Kay’s Bridge in order, and so far the council had not made a move. The bridge, which was below the old sanatorium, was not safe, and he would like to see the club take steps to improve it. For an inland trip to Whare Flat this route took a lot of beating. If the club could make a move th© Taieri Council- and also the City Council might help. He moved that the Taieri County Council be written to asking if it could see its way clear to go on with the repair of Kay’s Bridge, and that the club assist it as much as it could. Mr L. D. Coombs stated that the road over Flagstaff was m very bad older, but the round trip to Whare f lat was a very fine one. Mr H. Halliday did not favor the proposal. He said that all the attractions lay in Whare Flat itself, and the road was not fit for motor traffic. To make it favorable for the round trip would run into an expenditure of thousands of pounds. Mr J. L. Passmore: 1 know the road well, and I never take a car over that bridge. The road is practically all clay, and there is a bad bend near the old sanatorium. Still, the bridge should be made safe. If we assist with that work, however, we will be asked to assist with the road. Mr F. J. Williams moved that the secretary should write to the Taieri County Council asking for particulars. Mr Halliday; Does the road lead to the properties of any ratepayers? Mr Williams: “It would be of no advantage to them.” Mr Williams then amended the motion to read that the matter be brought to the attention of the Taieri County Council, with a request for particulars as to what could be done.
Mr Halliday objected to the club asking the council to spend money on a bridge and road which were of no interest to the council itself and of no use to motorists. It was ustd by the City Council to inspect its caohements, but that could be done with a horse and gig. He felt that they should ask all county councils to act in the way of doing work which was required at the present time—not that of ten years hence. Mr Williams: If ths Taieri County Council says there is a subsidy we should write to it. Mr Halliday: Allocations are often made without any intention ot the work being carried out. Mr De Beer supported Mr Halliday.
The following motion was carried on the voices;—“That the club write to the Taieri County Council in regard to the_ allocation for the bridge,_ and complaining ot the bridge’s condition.”
