LOCAL AND GENERAL

That the llivcrton Reach motor races to be held on,March 3 is to be a South Island gathering was stressed last evening by Mr J. L. Passmore at the monthly meeting of the Otago Motor Club. The speaker said it was the only beach in the South Island tit for that sort of racing; indeed, it was the finest beach in New Zealand, and the meeting was drawing speed kings from as far away as Auckland. The Marine Department had closed the beach for the day in order that a charge for admission could be made. In case of loss a guarantee was wanted, and the speaker urged all those interested in the welfare of the sport to purchase tickets. According 1o the traffic inspector at Invercargill everything was being done to make the day an enjoyable one, especially from the visitors’ point of view. Mr W. Wright added that if sufficient people (about 150) decided to go by rail a special excursion train leaving Dunedin at 7 a.m. and returning in, the evening, would be put on. A large fleet of buses ran from Invercargill to the beach.

Strong exception was taken by Mr W. Wright, who spoke at the Motor Club meeting Just evening, to the habit of some motorists, lady drivers included, who persisted in using the crowns of the roads. This was a selfish practice, Mr, Wright considered, and not only did it harm the roads, hut it also meant danger to other traffic. It was announced by Mr A. E. Ansell at the meeting of the Otago Motor Club last night that an exact mile for the purpose pf testing the mileage gauges of motor cars had, been measured off in King street. The case of Markhams Motors, Ltd., v. S. E. Clements, a claim for £4BB 4s in connection with the construction and supply of a motor bus, was continued in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon, and then adjourned until February 27.
