This week at i’ort Chalmers the Cambridge, Huntingdon, Mamilius, and the Cumberland will handle cargo, the last three loading only. The S.S. and A. liner Arawa sailed from Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon for Lyttelton to continue loading for Home. The Corinna sailed last night lor iNew Plymouth via ports. The Kamona, for Auckland, the 1 regress for Port Waikato via ports, and the Holmdale for Wanganui via ports, sailed last evening. The Kaikorai was to leave 1 ort Chalmers this afternoon after being recommissioned for Bluff and Sydney. She will load at Sydney and Newcastle for Bluff, Dunedin, and Lyttelton. The Opihi is due late to-night from Port Craig with timber. She will afterwards go to Wellington and Westport. The Kurow was to leave Wellington to-day with cargo for Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff. The Wingatui is to leave Wellington this evening for Lyttelton and Dunedin. After discharge here she will load out on Friday tor Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland. The Kuhika was to leave Napier today and Gisborne to-morrow for Lyttelton and Bluff, thence Dunedin to load for Napier and Gisborne via ports. The Storm was delayed in working yesterday,, the 1 cause being a shortage of labor, and she is now timed to sail to-uight for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Wanganui. The Devon, from Antwerp, passed through the Panama Canal on February 9 on her way to Auckland, where she is due about March 1. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion steamer Mataroa is now duo at Wellington on February 19, and at Auckland on February 25 to discharge and load general cargo for London. The tramp steamer Indiauola should leave Auckland about Thursday next for Lyttelton, where she completes the discharge of her Morocco phosphates. She will then proceed to W'estport lor bunkers, thence Makatea Island to load for Australia. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Wahine, from Wellington, arrived at Lyttelton at 6.45 a.in. to-day, and imsscugers and mails connected with the first express. MANUKA FROM MELBOURNE. The Union Company's intercolonial passenger steamer Manuka arrived this morning from Melbourne via Bluff, and berthed at the cross wharf to land passengers and discharge general cargo. The vessel brought the following passengers for Dunedin from Melbourne;—Saloon; Miss Archer, Miss Barker, Mr and Mrs Barrington, Miss Bleach, Mrs Carnachan. Miss Duncan, Mr Earle, Ur and Mrs Focken, Mrs Goodman, Mr and .Mrs H.ardv, Mr Jensen, Archbishop Kelly Mr” Lawson, Mrs Lc iage, Father O'Donnell, Miss P.enmthorne, Mr, Mrs, and Miss Reid, Mrs Si Is, Mr and Mrs Scharp, Miss Tuckwell. Airs Whilsh, Aliss Watts, Airs Wattson, Air Winkel; and twenty-six in the steerage. The Manuka is to sail at noon tomorrow for Lyttelton, Wellington, and Melbourne. TKALA LEAVES NEWPORT NEWS. Cabled news has been received that the ikala left Newport News on February 4, en route from St. John to New Zealand ports. The vessel is due at Auckland on March 11. The Ikala will also discharge at Lyttelton, Dunedin,-, and New Plymouth, but, will not discharge at Sydney or Melbourne, as at first intended. CARGO FROM PACIFIC COAST. Due at Auckland on February 2U from Pacific Coast ports, the motor ship Hauraki, alter discharge there, proceeds to Wellington, thence Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney to complete discharge. PERSONAL. Air J. W. Thomson has relieved Mr E J. Deed, second officer ol the Sussex, for holidays. Mr W. J- Freeman is now duct officer of the Kaitangata, having relieved Air N. M. Bonnetti for holidays. Mr L. Sinclair has been appointed second officer of the Opihi. relieving Air R. Alian, who is awaiting orders. Mr W T . Kchoe, second officer ol the Pooita, has gone ashore at Sydney on account of illness, and liis place has been taken by Mr A. P. Cousin. THE TURAKINA LOADING. Loading for Auckland and other New Zealand ports, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer ITirnkina sailed from Glasgow on Wednesday. The vessel’s final port will bo Liverpool. She is due at Auckland on April 24. SOMERSET LEAVES LIVERPOOL. Cabled nows lias been received that the Federal steamer Somerset let t Liverpool on February 7 for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, and Bluff. The vessel is due at Auckland on Alarch 20, and at this poit about April 5. NORFOLK LEAVES PANAMA. News by cablegram lm> been received that the Federal steamer Norfolk - arrived at Panama on February 4 from Auckland, and sailed again on February 5 for London and West Coast ports ol Great Britain. The vessel left Auckland on January 14. PORT BOWEN TO LOAD. The C. and D. Line steamer Port Bowen is due at Opua on February IS from Australia to commence loading tor London and West Coast ports of Great Britain. From Opua the vessel will proceed to Auckland, where she is duo about February 20. The Port Bowen will afterwards visit Gisborne, Napier, Wellington, and New Plymouth ,and return ’thence to Auckland to fill up. She is due at Auckland on March 6, and will sail finally from that port on Ala rch IU. DEEP-SEA SOUNDINGS. The German navy has made it a special task to imptove ocean charts with tlie help of modern echo sounding apparatus. Valuable results have been obtained by the Meteor and the cruiser Emden. The cruiser Berlin is now going to make another trip to the waters of Eastern Asia and the Pacific Ocean, and she has been ordered to make careful measurements at all points where the charts show shoals, which in those waters may nndeigo alterations from earthquakes. This task has been given to the cruiser ns a consequence of the loss of the Principessa Alafalda. which, according to Italian reports, struck an ■unknown shoal. Further, the Berlin is to check carefully the greatest depth ever found, which was reported in April ot last year by the cruiser Emden to bo a depth of J.UOUft, near Celebes, fho instruments of the Berlin are of an improved type. She will be the' first German, naval vessel to call at Indian and Australian ports since the war.

NOTICE TO MARINERS. The Marine Department notites that it is proposed to construct a timber ebb-stream deflecting groyne, 400 ft in length, having its inner end at tuo northern side of South Mole, Wanganui Harbor, at a position 730 ft (approx.; from its seaward end The upper portion of the. groyne will be exposed iOlt above M.H.W.S., and Irom its inner end of the groyne will take a westerly curve to its outer end. During construction and after competition the outer end of the. groyne will be marked bv a fixed white light. ■‘On completion of. the groyne the existing channel width ol bUOJt between North and South Moles will, at a distance of about 450 ft within t entrance, be restricted to dot t (approx.). No further notice vdl be given. SWEEPING OPERATIONS, The Marine Department, reports that the commodore commanding the New Zealand station has issued the following advice:—“Mariners are warned that from daybreak on I'ebrunry W sweeping operations will be conducted in the vicinity of the reported position of the Northumberland Rock, off Gisborne. These operations will probably last several days, and the area will be marked by unlighted buoys.. \ essels are warned to keep well dear ot the area.” Further notice will be issued when the operations are completed, and the buoys withdrawn. THE CITY OF RATH. Messrs Turnbull, Martin, and Co. reported this morning that the American steamer City oi Bath, from Now )oi k via northern ports, is due at Dunedin to-morrow. She will discharage geneiai cargo, and is to sail on Thursday .meinoon for Launceston, Burnie, and 1 ortland to complete. PLUME LEAVES SAN PEDRO. Cable advice received states that the tanker Plume left San Pedro on January 31 with a cargo of bulk motor spirit for discharge at Sydney, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. The vessel is due at Svdnev on February 24. at Lyttelton about'March 4, and at this port about March 7. PORT DENISON REPORTED. The Commonwealth and .Dominion Lino steamer Port Dension, which sailed from Port Chalmers for London on January 11, leiL Colon on February 8. CANADIAN HIGHLANDER THROUGH PANAMA. According to cable advice, the Canadian 'Highlander, en route irom Halilax to New Zealand, cleared the Panama Canal on February'9. The vessel is bringing Canadian cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Tinniru, and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland about March 8, and here about March 20. PORT HUNTER FROM LIVERPOOL. The C. and D. Lino steamer _ Port Hunter is due at Auckland about Thursday from Liverpool via Panama. The vessel is carrying general cargo lor discharge at Aii'kland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is expected at this port about March 1. VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL.
