TARIFF ALTERATIONS BRITISH PREFERENTIAL RATES , Under Hie terms of the tariff treaty with Australia New Zealand may not impose or increase the duty on Commonwealth produce or manufactures without giving six months’ notice. Notice of that intention was given recently and Thursday’s ‘ Gazette ’ announces that on and after July 1 next the British preferential tariff rates of duty are to be applied to the Australian goods enumerated in the accompanying schedule. The main items in the schedule are:—• Chocolate, also cocoa or chocolate mixed with milk or with any other food substance, 25 per cent, ad val. 1 Biscuits (other than ships’, plain, and unsweetened, or dog), 20 per cent, ad val. Confectionery, including medicated confectionery, liquorice, n.e.i., and sugared or crystallised fruits (but excluding, chewing gum, which pays 2d per lb), 25 per cent, ad val. Fruit trees and plants (blackberry, loganberry, and raspberry), rose plants, 25 per cent, ad val. Rennet, 10 per cent, ad val. Bottles and jars, empty plain glass, not being cut or ground, viz—(2) other kinds than those set out in paragraph 1 of tariff item No. 208, viz—(a) having a capacity exceeding one lluid ounce, but not exceeding eight fluid ounces, 20 per cent, ad val.; (b) bottles having a capacity exceeding eight fluid ounces, 15 per cent, ad val.; (c) jars having a capacity exceeding eight fluid ounces, 15 per cent, ad val. Timber, sawn, dressed, 7s Gd per 100 superficial feet. Crown seals, 20 per cent, ad val. Egg pulp and white or yolk of eggs, whether desiccated, liquid, frozen, or other, also any similar preparation of egg, 25 per cent, ad val., or 4d per lb, whichever rate returns the higher duty.

Furniture, cabmelmaking, and shelving specially suited for office, shop, or warehouse use made up from sheet metal, 25 per cent, ad val. Agricultural implements and machinery, 10 per cent, ad val. Wireless broadcast receiving sets mounted in cabinets, 10 per ccul. ad val.

Motor spirits, 4d per gal. Whitelead ground in oil, 6s per cwt. Fused gums for manufacture of varnishes, 20 per cent, ad val. Artists’ brushes, 25 per cent, ad val.
