A Huge Sum Involved

WASHINGTON, February 10. (Received February 11, at 11 a.m.) According to the official Navy Department estimate submitted to the House Naval Committee, the proposed five-year naval programme, with construction already begun, would cost 4,176,426,000d01. Seventy-one new ships would be laid down in five years, beginning in 1929, and would bo completed in 1937. The expenditure would bo spread over the period from 1929 to 1937.

that the programme would cost fa? more than the 800*000,OOOdol originally submitted. Tho total includes an annual outlay of approximately 147,000,000d0l for nine years, plus maintenance and appropriation of between 30G,f)00,000dol and 350,000,000d0l yearly. The grand total includes tho aeroplanes and personnel necessary to man five aircraft candors and twenty-five cruisers. A total of 1,490 new ’planes would be necessary, and an increase of 20,000 men would be required to man all the proposed additional ships.
