BRAVE SCHOOLBOYS
STRUGGLE TO SAVE DROWNING COMPANION [Per United Press Association.] HAMILTON, February 1.1. The story of a gallant though unsuccessful attempt by two schoolboys to save a companion from drowning was related at the inquest hold before the coroner (Mr Wyvcrn Wilson, S.M.) last night, concerning tho death of Ernest Claude Wesley Jonathan, aged twelve. Jonathan and other buys were swimming in the Waikato Diver at A\haitiora. Alan Farqnbar (aged _ thirteen) said that ho and his companions were undressing when Jonathan dived in and immediately called for help. Witness went in after him, and caught hold of him. Jonathan caught witness around the neck and pulled him under twice. Witness knocked him off and again caught a hold, but became exhausted and had to let go. Thojnas Elrich (aged thirteen) said that when Farquhar lot Jonathan go ho dived in and towed to a point within a. couple of yards of the river bank, when Jonathan, who bad hold of witness’s hand, released it and disappeared. The coroner returned a verdict of accidental drowning. Ho added that the act of the two lads, Farquhar and Elrick, in a brave endeavor to save Jonathan’s life, was to be very highly commended.
