PURDY-IZZARD CONTEST
WHERE BOXING WRITERS DIFFER. “Solar Plexus,” in the Sydney ‘Referee,’ in his comments of the recent drawn contest between Purdy and Jvsaird, wrote: “ Englishman Ernie .Izzard brought out a reputation ot the best as a lighter. He came with excellent credentials, and lived up to them in his initial fight. Charlie Purdy, the New Zealand light-weight, provided him with a fitting test. Izzard used bis straight left with ramrod precision, and in the early rounds also connected solidly with the uppercut to the cum. He was cleverer and move convincing than Purdy in close, but after the eighth round the New Zealander, fighting at his top, made matters very interesting for the visitor, who kept backing. The pace was continued to the close, when the referee crowned the pair. Purdy undoubtedly put up a great fight, yet did not deserve to share the honors.” Jim Donald, in ‘ Smith’s Weekly, and another well-known authority, ou the other band had this to say “Purdy staged a grandstand finish in the fifteenth and last round, and had slightly the best of a brilliant wind-up to a thoroughly interesting and most enjoyable scrap. l/.zard’s splendid work late in the bout just -ailed to balance the point score run up by Purdy in the earlier portion. Thougn in my opinion Purdy won, 1 think the Englishman was short of a gallop. Anyway, he is a tricky boxer and a welcome addition to the Stadium stoush roll.”
