John Sullivan alias Joseph O’Keefe, aged forty-eight, who is at present serving a sentence of seven years tor manslaughter, was committed for trial at Auckland on an eighteen-year-old crime. He pleaded not guilty to stealing at Kinahoku, in January, 1910, a black gelding and harness, of a total value of £lO ss. It was alleged that the accused hired the horse to attend a court case at Kawhia, and that he later sold the animal, the owner seeing no more of Sullivan until he identified him in court. Confused Christmas Shopper: “I want a pair of spec-rimmed horniclcs —I mean snomrimraed hectacles—dash it! I mean heckrimmed spernacles.” Shopwalker: “I know ■what you mean, sir. Mr Brown, show the gentleman a pair of rim-sperned hectacles.”
