GARDENING CLUB
Tli© Gardening Club held its first meeting for the year on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance. The president (Mr Hollingworth) was in the chair. The subject for the evening was 1 Carnations,’ and the Chairman explained the various inodes of propagation, the chief of which is by seeds or layering. As this is the proper time of the year for layering, he gave a practical demonstration of the process. In the discussion that ensued Mr J. Whyte explained the characteristics of the perpetual flowering, or tree carnation, and its propagation from seed. A feature of the meeting was a competition for the best vase of carnaticms. This brought forth good competition, and was won by Mrs Orr Campebll. Mrs Reillv was second and Miss M. Nelson third. Mr J. W. MTntyre exhibited some fine specimens of flowering shrubs, which no explained. Chief amongst these were Notospartium, Carmichaelia torulosum, Carmichaelia odorata, Cyathodes robusta, Callistemon speciosus, and Callima vulgares. There was also on exhibition Clematisite, bv Mr W. H. Holmes and Miss Kinder;*'Clarkia, by Miss M. Nelson; Epactris and Phielisia, by Mr J. Hoy and Mrs M'Gregor; Antirrhinums, by Mrs W. Owens; sweet peas, by Mrs R. S. Anderson; carnations, by Mr Blackburn, and carnations and sweet Pe On the motion of Mr J. N. Stewart, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to M" Hollingworth and others who had assisted in the meeting.
