SEEDS FOR SUMMER SOWING
The Virginian stock is an earlyflowering annual Sin high in several colors. Small _ groups of the freeflowering Viscaria, _ Ift high, are attractive in the mixed flower border. As an edging tho pink flowers of Saponaria calabrica, 6in high, are effective. Two blue-flowered hardy annuals, Ncanophila insignia, 6in, and Phacelia campanularia, Din, are distinct and desirable. Limnanthes Douglasii is a fragrant dwarf spreading annual with yellow and white flowers, early blooming and beloved of bees. Lastly, mention must be made of stocks and antirrhinums. In exposed gardens it is usually found more satisfactory to give antirrhinum the protection of a cold frame in winter, though if they can be grown on a sheltered border outside sturdier and healthier plants usually result. With regard to the Brompton and East Lothian stocks there are no more desirable hardy annuals, or as some prefer to call them, biennials. Sow the seeds on a sheltered border during the second half of July or early in August (January and February).—‘Popular Gardening.'
