On Mr Justice MacGregor’s direction the jury returned a verdict of not guilty in a case in which Richard George Harland, fanner, of Apiti, was charged with carnal knowledge of his step-daughter, aged fourteen years. The girl was the only one who gave evidence. His Honor remarked that a charge of this nature must be corroborated in some way. Although the girl appeared to be truthful, nobody witnessed the assault, although the mother was suspicious. Unfortunately, the mother had put a leading question to her daughter, who had replied “Yes.” That, however, was not corroboration.
