AMATEUR ATHLETICS

PACIFIC CLUB'S GATHERING WOOD'S FAST MILE Large fields were the order in every event at the evening amateur athletic meet staged under ideal weather conditions at the Caledonian Ground by the Pacific Club last night, the goodly number of spectators present being treated to some good performances during the evening. Undoubtedly the best effort was that of the young (,'aversham runner, L. Wood, in the mile handicap, the time returned being lin in 26 3-Ssec, which represents the fastest race on the ground for very many years. Wood was on the 45yds mark, and ran a splendidly-judged race. He has a lovely, long, loose stride, with a nice free action, and his time represented under 4min .Msec from scratch. Both sprint events went to limit men and the relay handicap to the Pacific Club, who scored a popular win. The javelin throwing handicap saw an improvement in the general standard of throwing, the best performance being P. G. Ward’s 133 ft Din. The_two-mile cycling handicap drew splendid fields, three heatj being necessary. Though the times were slow, the softness of the track being partly responsible, some splendid finishes were witnessed, and in the final S. Bremford just beat his fellow-backmarkor, E Palmer, in 6min 17sec. Owing to sickness, several prominent club officials were unable to be present, this upsetting the arrangements at the. outset. However, once the meeting was under way the programme was carried out satisfactorily. Results 75 YARDS HANDICAP.
