PROBATION GRANTED

“ RECEIVING " GOODS AN ALEXANDRA CASE Found guilty the other day of having dishonestly obtained socks and a necktie which was missed from a shop at Alexandra, George Thomas Mason appeared before His Honor Mr Justice Sim this morning in tho Supreme Court for sentence. Tno jury found the accused not guilty of breaking, entering, theft. The Crown Prosecutor (Mr F. B. Adams) said that nothing_ was previously known against the prisoner. His Honor said that he noticed that prisoner was a canvasser. Mason replied that he had no settled territory, but travelled about from the Cape to the Bluff. His Honor said that in view of the fact that nothing was previously known against accused, and in view of the fact that the verdict of the jury meant that accused was guilty only in respect to receiving the socks and necktie and not tho money concerned, he thought ho was justified in releasing him upon a term of probation. Mason was released upon probation for a term of two years. Conditions were that he pay the cost of the socks and tie (£1) within one calendar month, and pay £lO towards the costs of the prosecution within the same time.
