AFTER THE CUP

" HOLDING A POST MORTEM " FRIENDS FALL OUT “ They had all come from Wingatui, and were holding a post-mortem on the races,” said Mr E. J. Anderson, when defending John Alexander Shearer, who was charged in tho Police Court this morning with having assaulted James Edward Pope in Maclaggan street last night. sub-inspector Eahcy said that a constable’s attention had been drawn to a quarrel in Maclaggan street, and he found defendant and another young man having a fight. At any rate defendant was seen to strike tho other on tlij head, and ho was arrested. The two were, it appeared, friends, the assaulted man being a jockey, and the defendant an employee at Wingatui. Mr Anderson said that Shearer had never been in trouble before. The two men were good friends, and the quarrel arose out of the events which had happened at tho races. Tho affair Had not been altogether one-sided, and blows were struck by both. Counsel added that if defendant was convicted his work at Wingatui would cease. The affair had occurred in tho remote recess of Canongate, or thereabouts. In answer to the bench, defendant said his ago was twenty-five years. Does the witness claim expenses? asked His Worship. The witness (another jockey, named Anderson) assured tho court that he did.

Tho Magistrate (Mr Bundle) said he would adjourn the matter for twelve months on condition that defendant paid the witness’s expenses (10s) within twenty-four hours. It would depend on defendant’s conduct in the meantime as to how the matter would be eventually dealt with.

A request that defendant’s name be suppressed was refused.
