Dunedin Jockey Club

Cup Won by Pink Note

Goblin Market Wins Champagne

The weather was almost oppressively hot at Wingatui yesterday, and it may have been responsible for a slight fall-ing-off in the attendance as compared with the crowd on Cup Day last year. The totalisator handled £23,8081, as compared with £26,84 last year. During the afternoon two minor inquiries were held. T. Metcalf, the rider of Nanette in the Trial Stakes, was charged with having bumped Felony. Evidence showed that another horse forced Nanetta into Felony-. The acciden' being quite accidental, no action was taken

lock the money up and fields always big enough to pay two dividends, yet the £23,808J invested showed a decrease of £3,033 on tho amount handled last year on Cup day. It may have been too hot for some to bet, but it is quite evident that there is not the money about that there was for betting purposes. The racing provided most interesting finishes, and Mr Aidworth’s ability as a judge was severely taxed, and stood the test well. Mr M'lvor’s starting was good, though compared with tho northern officials too ranch time is lost after the signal from the totalisator that it lias been balanced. In the North Island the horses are lined up in the_ barrier waiting for the signal, and quite frequently are dispatched immediately it is given. Pink Note won the Dunedin Cup like a racehorse, and it was one of the most popular victories ever recorded in this race. He did not get a good run in the race, but was excellently handled by J. T. Andrews, and great credit is due to J. Ruth ledgo ior the excellent condition in which ho lauded the horse at the post. Pink Note, who is easily the stoutest of Paper Money’s progeny racing at the present time, was bred by bis owner, and has been one of the most consistent horses in the dominion during the past two seasons. Never before have the cheers for the owner, trainer, jockey, and horse been so heartily given as they were on this occasion when Mr Hanlon, the president of the club, called for them after presenting Mr Ainge with the handseme gold cup which is attached to the stake. The sectional times of the race as taken By a private watch-holder were: First two furlongs, 26 2-ssec; four, 51 4-ssec; six, Imm It 2-ssec; mile, Imin 41 l-ssec; and ton furlongs, 2min 6 3-ssec. It was quite like old times to see Mr Harry James in charge of Hie meeting, and tho management was well up to his usual standard, Inm at the same time overvone regretted that the result of last week’s accident prevented Mr L. G. Hill from being present to take charge of the meeting. Out ot respect to the memory, of tho ate Messrs Armour and Biggins, who weie officials of tbe club, the flags on the grand stands wore flown at ImlMnast.

After the Cup race the judicial stewards held an inquiry into the interference met with by Set Sail (F. Voight) near the six furlong post, owing to Queen Balboa (L. J. Ellis) leaving the Queen alboa. (L. J. Ellis) leaving the rails. After hearing the evidence of the riders concerned, the stewards decided that Ellis had not been guilty of any offence. Dubious, Cartoon, and Whitnan.ii were withdrawn from the Autumn Huidles, and in a. poor totting race Coastguard was made a slightly better favorite than Wharncliffe, with Jack o Lantern and Koauau the best backed o the others. Jack o’ Lantern was not allowed to get into the line, and attei delaying the" start for fully ten minutes he wSs left fully a hundred yards Beauty Light and Atapo ledl oiei be first hurdle, where Coastguard foil, ad going past the stand Beauty Light and Atapo were just clear of Jack o Lantorn, who mad© up lus g™' l ' l '* fast, and Kaikahu, Wharncliffe tailing the field. When the barrier rose Clarenson led out from Nanette and Rhondda, Quarterdeck being slow to find her feet. Clarenson led along the back and to the far turn, where Nanette, Rhondda, Eliminator, and Quarterdeck were lying next. Quarterdeck ran into second place going up the hill, and was with Clarenson at the home turn. Taking charge before reaching the distance post Quarterdeck had to be ridden out to heat Felony, who finished fast from the turn into the straight, by a neck. Rhondda was nearly three lengths further back third, with Eliminator, Clarenson. and Tardy next. Racing up the hill Silver Coot just headed Bright Mark, and the former turned into the straight in charge, and a little out from the rails, which gave Money order a good run through. Stormy, Circulation, and Good as Gold, who was last away from the barrier, were next. At the distance post Money Order challenged Silver Coot, and Sudden Storm came fast on the outside. In a great finish Money Order just reached Silver Coot to make a dead heat, and Sudden Storm was a short neck off third. Then came Stormy, Booster, Circulation, and Rob. Investments, £3,387.

The field for the Dunedin Cup was reduced by the withdrawal of Heather Lad and Wingatui, and Pink Note, who had been a good favorite from the time the handicaps appeared, was sent out better backed than Set Sail, with Satrap, Thorndale, Nincompoop, Queen, Balboa, Countersign, and Overhaul next in order. From a good start Satrap was slow to get going, and Nincompoop led from Front Rank, Queen Balboa, and Set Sail.
