WOOL ADVANCES AGAIN

BEST SALE OF SEASON [Feb United Pebss Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, February 9. A remarkable feature about the woo! sale that concluded in Christchurch today is that passings were practically non-existent. In one catalogue of 5,600 bales not one bale was passed at auction, and as far as this particular firm is concerned this experience is without precedent. When the sale was resumed in the morning the excited competition of last evening for medium wools was more than maintained, this class generally showing very little disparity on first classings. The actual cause of this is hard to explain except that Continental buyers are equipped with orders for secondary wools and_ not for_ super., and the weight of their competition for the former gave added zest to the competition. _ Compared with last Christchurch sale there was an all-round improvement in every class of wool of 2d per lb, except" for merino. This held last sale s values, but very little more. In the case of pieces and cotted and dingy wools the advance was more than the figure stated, pieces in lot after lot making within 2d of first classing on Timaru. Prices fully a penny in advance were recorded for all qualities. There were no new figures made in fleece wools, but pieces made higher prices than on the preceding night. The top figures of the sale in their respective classes were: Merino 25d, halfbred 273 d; Corriedale 26|d, three-quar-ter-bred (according to description) 25d, medium cross-bred 22Jd, half-bred pieces 24d. Altogether the sale was the best held this season in the dominion, and is the nearest approach to the “boom” prices of 1924-25. The following is the range of prices:— Merino, 64/70, 60/64 — Super., 24d to 25d. Average, 21 d to 26}-d. Inferior, 18]d to 201 d. Corriedale — Super., 25d to 26Jd. Average, 22d to 24 \ d.
