NEW TOWN HALL

MAYOR TO LAY FOUNDATION STONE MARCH 3 THE DATE Last night tho City Council approved of the suggestion embodied in a minute by the mayor that the foundation stone of tho new Town Hall.be laid by His Worship himself. The minute read as follows: “The matter of the laying of tho foundation stone of the new Town Hall building has engaged my attention, and I have conferred with the Finance Committee on the subject. it was hoped that His Excellency the Gover-nor-General might be able to come to Dunedin and conduct tho ceremony, but His Excellency has intimated that he much regrets that his engagements will not permit of his coming to Dunedin again for several months. With the concurrence of the Finance Committee it has accordingly been decided, subject to tho council’s approval, that the stone be laid by myself, and that the date for tho function be Saturday, March 3. It is suggested that the ceremony need not be of an elaborate nature—a simple yet dignified procedure could bo arranged which should adequately serve to emphasise the importance of the event in our civic history.”
