SPECTACULAR FIRE
WAREHOUSE COMPLETELY GUTTED FANCY GOODS AND FIREWORKS PROVIDE FIERCE FUEL [Pbr United Press Association ] CHRISTCHURCH, February 8. Firo last evening completely gutted the warehouse of Aitchison, Stcans, and Co., Ltd., in Lichfield street, causing very extensive damage. The outbreak was discovered shortly after 10.30, by which time it had obtained a firm hold of the middle of the building, and the firemen had a very strenuous battle with tho flames before the outbreak was brought under control. The stock, which comprised fancy goods of a highly inflammable nature, provided fierce fuel lor the blaze. Fireworks exploded and added to the din. No estimate of the damage has yet been given, but it was very considerable, and is largely in excess of the insurances. Mr Frank Steans, managing director of the firm, stated that the insurances on the stock to approximately £20,000, and on the building to about £5,000.
