BITES BY SPIDERS
The kalipu spider is nut in it with the venomous varieties in New South Wales spiders. An unprecedented crop ot’ spider bite cases has been chronicled in (he suburbs of Sydney lately. The fact that eight persons in the Hanks Town district alono have bad to receive medical treatment after being bitten by spiders lias made parents extra cautious about their children, for in many cases where children have been bitten fatal results have followed. Hitherto it had been the general belief (hat the only really venomous spider we had was (ho red-backed variety. Recent cases, however, have been caused by the trapdoor species—a large blackish spider, which gets its name horn' (.he fact that it burrows into (lie ground and builds a. sort ot hinged lid lo ils nest. It seems to have developed (he habit of invading houses and verandahs, and many children have been bitten on the feet when putting on hoots or shoes that have been lying about for a day or two. A doctor was, bitten some lime ago, and when he fell the clTcels ho expressed the opinion that a bile from one of the insect* would prove fatal to any child.
