DUNEDIN CUP MEETING

THE FINAL GALLOPS [By St. Clair.] The weather was beautifully fine at Wingatui this morning, and work commenced while the moon was still sinning. The outside of the course proper and the plough track were open, and the former was very hard and fast. Booster and Bright Mark opened the proceedings by running six furlongs on the grass. Over the last furlong Bright Mark was going the better, but Booster did not appear to be ridden out.

Blue Dragoon ran five furlongs on the grass in 68sec. Shaliman moved nicely in three-quar-ter pace work on the grass. First Sight beat Moneymine_ over five furlongs on the plough in 64 3-sseo.

Money Order was worked alone over six furlongs on the grass, and ho covered the last five very attractively in C 5 4-sscc.

Sky .Quest boat his stable companion Quarter Deck over five furlongs on the plough in 65 3-ssec. Goblin Market was only given slow work on the grass. First Lady ran four furlongs on the plough in 58 3-ssoc. Silver Coot covered seven furlongs on the grass in Imin 36sec, the last halfmile taking Msec. Stormy finished in front of Zaragoza over five furlongs on the plough in 64.1 sec. Wayward heat Clarenson over six furlongs on the plough in Imin 19sec, and looks very well. Sudden Storm was beaten by Full Feather in a sprint over four forlongs on the plough in 50 1-Sscc. Coastguard covered five furlongs in Imin llsec on the plough, and is very well just now. Wingatui was sent away over nine furlongs by herself on the plough, and sprinted home over the last four in 53 2-ssec, hut did not please the critics. Luminant was beaten by Rotor over six furlongs on the grass in Imin 2L -J>-ssec.

Limerick and Arikiwai were companions in a gallop over seven furlongs on tlic plough. The first furlong was left behind in 12 2-6 see, two in 25sec, and three in 37 3-ssee, the full distance taking Imin 34 2-ssee. Limerick was going very easily over the last furlong. Countersign and Satrap ran a mile on the course proper in Imin 49£sec, the throe-year-old moving attractively. Felony and Maitai ran four furlongs on the plough, the last three taking 4(Kec.

Overhaul ran six furlongs alone on tho grass in Imin 23sec. He appears to have lightened up somewhat. Money Peer also went alone over five furlongs on the plough, the last four of which occupied 54 4-ssec. Spearmaid cleared right away from Black Duke in a gallop of flue furlongs on the grass in 65 l-ssee. After covering a circuit and a-half at hail-pace on the plough Heather Lad sprinted home over the last six furlongs in Imin 20soc. Ho moved soundly, and were he more seasoned would have a chance in the Cup. Pink Note, who looks very bright and healthy, but a little on tho light side, was sent over six furlongs on tho plough. His stable companion, Eyed Ova, picked him up at the four furlong post, but was unable to extend the Cup candidate, who ran tho distance in Imin 2d 3-osc.c.

Bin Tin Tin was only indulged in three-quarter pace, the last five furlongs on the grass taking Imin ISsec. Pilaster was too good tor Wine Tray over four furlongs in 55 4-sscc on the plough. Dumblane pulled hard over two circuits of slow work on the grass. After Atapo, Belie, and Wharncliff had jumped two schooling hurdles they were sent for a mile on tho plough. Wharncliff stood the other pair up ten lengths at tho start, and beat them home in Imin 52 2-osec.

Cartoon, who looks and gallops well, jumped two -schooling hurdles very quickly. Set Sail easily accounted for Tardy over six furlongs on tho plough in Imin 22scc. Her trainer stated this morning that it was still doubtful whether she will start in the Cup. Good as Gold ran down five furlongs on the grass in G 7 l-ssec, and could have improved on this time had she been allowed to do so.

King Balboa, who looks very well, was too good for Red Sen over hall a mile on the grass in 52 2-sscc. Rob and Beauty Light went a good five furlongs on the plough in 64 2-ssec. Nincompoop and Gay Sonnet ran six furlongs on the grass in Imin 20scc, the former going very well. Greencloth beat Mariis over the same distance and track in Imin 21-jsec. Greencloth is showing improving form with each gallop. Antrim Boy ran four furlongs alone on the grass in 55scc. Schottische ran right away from Mime over seven furlongs on the grass in Imin 3450;. Lucy Locket and Thorndalo ran six furlongs on the plough in Imin 18 3-5 sec, one of tho most attractive gallops of the morning, and the latter was going the better when the post was reached.

Receipt sprinted down three furlongs on the grass in 39sec, moving cpiite soundly. Queen Balboa beat ' Bilbo over six furlongs on the grass in Imin 6 4-ssec. The latter looks all the belter for her recent racing.

A GOOD DAY’S SPORT PROMISED To-morrow the Dunedin Jockey Club will commence its fifty-fifth Cup meeting at noon, and with good fields and an excellent track a good day’s sport is assured. Fine weather seems certain, at least for the opening day, and as most of the business places are closing (or tho afternoon a record crowd can bo looked for.

Up to the time of going to press no horses had been scratched, and the only doubtful starter iu the Cup is the topweight. Hei trainer stated this morning that the mare was quite all right, but her owner would decide whether to start her in the Cup or Publican’s Handicap when he arrived on the course. An excellent train service has been provided, specials leaving Dunedin at 'short intervals from about 10.40 a.m. till 11.45 a.m.; and as the road through Green Island has now been put in order the motor traffic is sure to be heavy. Horses that should run prominently to-morrow are:—

Hurdles.—Jack o’ Lantern, Dubious, and Coastguard Trial Stakes.—Grecuclotli, Quarterdeck. and Eliminator.

President’s Handicap.—-King Balboa, First Light, and Lady M'Kenna. Publicans’ Handicap.—Money Order, Booster, and Circulation. Dunedin Cup.—Set Sail (if started), Satrap, Thorndale, and Queen Balboa. Champagne Stakes.—Goblin Market, Em Tin Tin, and Full Feather.

Berwick Handicap.—Spearmaid, Wayward, and Sky Quest. Stewards’ Handicap. Overdrawn, Schottische, and Gay Sonnet.
