DUNEDIN PRESBYTERY

FIRST MEETING OF YEAR The Dunedin Presbytery held its first meeting for 1928 to-day. The Rev. David Campbell's term as moderator having expired, the Rev. John Kilpatrick moved that the Rev. Dr E. X. Herrington bo appointed moderator. The election was made unanimously, and Presbytery accorded its thanks to the retiring moderator. A welcome was extended by the Moderator to the Rev. W. J. Comrie, treasurer of the Presbyterian Church ot New Zealand, who is on a visit from Wellington. Mr Comrie thanked Presbytery, tor associating him. “ Sometimes we look npon Dunedin with a little envy anti sometimes with a touch of covetousness., said Mr Comrie. “ But, speaking for the church generally, I can safely say we recognise that Dunedin is the stronghold of Presbyterianism. We look to you for the lead ni many things, and we do not look in vain. The Rev. A. G. Tryine (Ashburton) was also associated with Presbytery. A welcome was also extended to the Rev. Mr Darvell, of the London Missionary Society, who is on a holiday visit from Samoa. The Moderator congratulated Mr Darvell on the succossiul sendees of tho society, which was undenominational, in Samoa, his work having been praised by the Administrator. The Rev. E. J. Tipler was appointed Presbytery’s representative on the committee on Assembly Committees and Officers, which meets in Wellington during May. It was reported that the Rev. J. MSimpson (St. Stephen’s, North Dunedin) was in ill-health. Mr Simpson wrote that under medical advice he had been forced to relinquish preaching for some months. The congregation would not hoar of his resigning and hud granted him three months’ leave of absence. , „ ... Mr Win. M'ifilrca said that -Mr bunpson had been so energetic that his breakdown had been caused by overwork. The Rev. A. Sangster had been asked to accept tho locum tenens. General expressions of sympathy with Mr Simpson were made by members. Professor Davies was appointed interim moderator ot St Stephen s. The Clerk reported that a call from Edendalo had been handed on to the Her. W. Gilmour, Roxburgh. He had received ;i letter irom Mr Gilmour, in which he stated;—“ I owe much to jou and the Dunedin Presbytery lor recommending my application to the Assembly. 1 wish that yon might express to the brethren my thanks lor their kindly interest in my case. Coming as 1 do all the way from Canada, you can well imagine how I have been touched by the courtesy shown me by your Dunedin Presbytery and also by the General Assembly.” Advice was received Irom Nelson Presbytery that the Rev. J. G. b. Dunn (Kaikoura) had accepted the call to Green Island, in succession to Rev. John Kilpatrick (retired). It was decided to induct Mr Dunn into his new charge on March 1, the Rev. A. C. Watson to preach, the Rev. C A. Kennedy to address the minister, and the Rev. R. F. Fish the congreg*. tioiT. The moderator will perform tne induction. , D A motion of sympathy with the Rev. Dr Dickie in the illness oi his wife was passed.
