When stumps were drawn South Africa had lost no wickets for 6 (Taylor 3, Coen 2). Sutcliffe and Tyklesley played soundly, and were bright in patches, but excellent howling kept them on the defensive. The second wicket added 130. Hammond played freely and attractively.
