LADY ATHLETES AX OTAGO IMIOTKST. (SPECIAL TO THE ‘STAR.’] WELLINGTON, February 6. A protest by two lady runners, Maud I’ettett and Elizabeth Burns, against the decision of the role roe at an athletic meeting of the Otago Centre in allowing May Stewart to start in the final of the ladies’ KHlyds championship when she did not compete in a heat was received by the New Zealand Athletic Council to-night. “ The only rule hearing on the question which 1 can find in the rule book is that which states that all matters relating to the conduct of a meeting shall he decided by the referee,” said the Chairman (Mr H. Austad), “Unless there was a rule on the programme that the first and second in the heats only should start in the final I don’t think we cam do anything. In its covering letter the Otago Centre says that it is considering the cutting out of ladies’ events. Those girls say that Miss Stewart was too late lor the heats. I think that we might get a copy nl the programme and see that tho heats were run up to time.” Mr H. Franklin : “ The referee has full control, and I don’t see that we can do anvthing.” It was decided to follow the course proposed by the chairman.
