A PROMISING CUP TRIAL

The fancied Dunedin Cup candidate Thorndale lost caste by being pointlessly beaten by Nincompoop in a seven furlongs’ task at Riccarton on Satnr- . day. Botli were together to the | straight, but at this point Nincompoop ' left Ids companion and ran homo an easy winner in Imin 32 1-5 sec. .Nincompoop had C. Emerson in the saddle, I while W. Brown was on Thorndale, so ■that the latter had a substantial conf cession in weight. Nincompoop gave an attractive display, and was eased up over the concluding stages, so the time recorded must bo considered good. It was certainly a promising cup trial, and the Absurd gelding will he in the picture during the race on Thursday, but it is questionable if ho will successfully master the full mile and a-half. No excuse could be made for Thorndale. He galloped well for tho first seven furlongs, but from that onwards, although vigorously ridden, was outclassed. This was not his proper form, and he will 'still be in demand for the Dunedin Cup, in which ho will be ridden by A. E. Ellis, -
