FIRE! A Huge Salvage Sale FIRE! ANOTHER CITY FIRE * (Extract from ‘ Evening Star ’ of January 30.) The rapid locating of the fire seemed almost impossible, as from the smoke it seemed that the fire could have been burning in any one of the big buildings on either side of the street. But, as Superintendent Napier stated to-day, his luck was in, and the first building entered was that on the east side, occupied on the ground floor by F. and R. Woods, drapers. The fire was located in the workroom of G. W. Reilly, tailor, but had obtained a good hold. Three doors were smashed down by the efficient brigadesmen, and a lead of water was brought up the stair way from Princes street. While water was being poured on to the first floor salvage men were working at feverish speed in F. and R. Woods’s shop, placing tarpaulins over the stock and spreading sawdust on the floor. The brigade made a splendid save. A certain amount of damage from smoke and water was done to the manchester, dress, and mercery departments of F. and R. A novelist was present at a gathering of artists, and during the evening was called upon to make a speech. “Gentlemen,” he said, “as this is an assembly in which art is largely represented, I feel it incumbent upon me to say a few words on the subject of painting. Speaking_ personally, my only efforts in that direction were on an occasion when I enamelled our bath. My friends said to me,_ ‘My dear fellow, it’s no good your going in for painting unless you’re, prepared to stick to your work,’ and, continued the author, “I did.” INCREASED DETAIL IN SNAPSHOTS. A feature of photography with “RAJAH,” the new improved film, is the extra wealth of detail which it records . . . giving improved pictures as with an expensive lens. “ RAJAH ” Film fits all cameras, and costs no more than ordinary film.
