BOWLING
HONORING CHAMPIONS
At South Dunedin ’Town Hall on Saturday night there was a large assembly of Caledonian Bowling Club members and many from other chibs, also officials of the Dominion Bowling Council and the-Dunedin Centre. ■ Mr W. T. Henaghan (president of Caledonian Club) was in the chair, and in his brief welcoming remarks said that the gathering was in honor of the club’s members who had returned from the Dominion Association tournament with the cream of the prizes—that was_ to say, with the rinks and singles trophies. Later, when proposing the main toast, “The Guests of the Evening,” the President expressed the satisfaction that their clubmatos felt at the honor which had come to the club through Messrs F. Kettle, V. Langley, D Hutchison, W. Foster, and J. Scott. The club felt when these gentlemen went away that it would be worthily represented, and such had proved to ho the case. Mr Henaghan wont on in humorous vein, giving instances of the wonderful “ team ” work exhibited at Christchurch by the rink players, the audience being thoroughly amused. But their tactics lin’d been justified by results. Nobody had been surprised to see Mr J. Scott win the singles event, for those who knew him recognised him as one of the very best bowlers in New Zealand. Caledonian Club felt pride in the doings of their members. The toast was drunk with musical honors, and the guests replied in turn, all expressing themselves as pleased at doing honor to their club. Mr Foster’s remarks were in characteristic style, amusing and interesting. Other toasts honored were :—“ Dominion Council and Centro,” proposed by Mr J. F. Hamel, responded to by Messrs Marlow and Fastier; “The Visitors,” proposed by Mr J. Abbott, responded to by various visitors; “The Press,” proposed by Mr J. Carroll; and “ Tbo Ladies,” proposed by Air V. Cnvanagb. A first-class vocal programme, every item well worth listening to. was contributed by Messrs Swann, Montague, Paterson, and Jeffs, Mr L. S. James playing helpful accompaniments. Tbo club’s Social Committee was most attentive, and a well-arranged function closed shortly after 11 o’clock.
