LOCAL AND GENERAL

The Marlborough provincial _ war memorial, a handsome tower containing a chiming clock surmounting a Chamber of Memories, in which are inscribed the names of 409 men who made the supremo sacrifice, was unveiled at Blenheim on Saturday by Major-general Sir Andrew Russell (says a Press Association telegram) and dedicated by the local clergy in tho presence of a record gathering from all parts of Marlborough. The ceremony was a most impressive one, concluding with the sounding of the Last Post and the placing at the base of the memorial of wreaths from local organisations and relatives of tho fallen. Burglars who entered the shop of VV. Hill, tobacconist and hairdresser, in Tory street, Wellington, displayed remarkable daring, according to the story of a young man who was in the vicinity. His uncle’s car was parked in an alleyway at the rear of the shop, and he was waiting outside the shop when two men engaged him in conversation. He heard the rattle of tools from the back of the shop, but did not think anything was amiss. Next morning tools were found to be missing, and when the owner returned to the shop he discovered them at the back door, which had been forced open. Tobacco, machines, razors, and money, of a total value of about £lO, were stated to have been taken. A new primary school for boys, to be known as St. Patrick’s, was "officially opened at Oaniaru and blessed by Dr Whyte, Roman Catholic bishop of Dunedin, before a large attendance, including the mayor (Mr F. Crawshaw), who extended a welcome to Dr Whyte. The new school is an adjunct to St. Kevin’s College, which was opened at tho beginning of last year,' and will be carried on under the auspices of the Christian Brothers.—Press Association.
