An outbreak of five in the AT Hotel, at the corner of Cashel and Colombo streets, Christchurch, in the heart or the city’s business area, shortly before 5 o’clock last evening was prevented from seriously endangering the valuable premises adjoining by the prompt action of the fire brigade. fire started in the roof, apparently being caused by a spark from, a neighboring chimney. The two-stoned building is an old one, and is constructed of wood, and the flames quickly spread, but the brigade succeeded in confining the fire to the roof, and only two rooms were damaged. It is estimated that the damage amounts to about £SO. Messrs Beath and Co., drapers, whose premises adjoin the hotel, are the owners of the building, which is insured for £7,000 in the Northern and Phcenix offices. The licensee is Mr Thomas Quirk. Figures supplied by the Railways Department show that nearly half the ex-, presses and mail trains in the last recorded year kept .to schedule, and the average of lateness of all that ran late was six minutes. This is very creditable, considering the hilly nature of New Zealand and the liability fo slips, wash-outs, and other disturbing factors.
