ECONOMY AXE
VICTORIAN RAILWAY SYSTEM Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, February 2, After a lung conference between the officers of the Railways Union, the Federated Union of Engine Drivers and Firemen, and the Ministry, Mr T. TunnecMe (Minister of Railways) announced that certain steps had been decided upon owing to the decreased railway revenue and the need of economy. In addition to increased freight rates on several forms of low material, and working reduced hours in portions of the service, 700 men would be dismissed, and a reduction made in the train services to a number of country districts. It was hoped by these measures to improve the financial position of the department by £300,000 over the remaining portion-of the current financial year.
