DUNEDIN COMPETITIONS
TWENTY-SIXTH FESTIVAL The annual festival of the Dunedin Competitions Society began this morning m the usual businesslike manner, the competitors coming forward in tho three halls and finding everything ready. The judges are: Instrumental music, Mr E. Empson (Christchurch); vocal music, Mr James Brash (Sydney); elocution, Mr Culford Bell (Auckland); fancy dancing, Miss Emery (Christchurch) ; Scotch dancing, hornpipes, etc., Mr D. M'Kecbnie (Dunedin). Mr C. A. Martin is tho official accompanist. Marshals.—At the theatre, Mr \V. H. Ferens; at tile Victoria Hall, Mr S. Counter; at Burns Hall, Mr J. Beecot. MUSIC.. Piano Solo (12 and under 14), ‘ Miniature Pa Morales ’ (Bridge) .—Of the twenty-four entrants twenty-two appeared, and Mr Empson chose for recall Luella Hamer (Kaikorni), Marion Jeffery (Broad Bay), and Stuart Henderson (Dunedin). Highly commended: William Blackie, Kyra Davidson, Ruby Price, Kenneth Rigby. Baritone Solo, ‘Tho Ships of Yule’ (Shaw). —Eight of the nine entered faced Mr Brash, and he picked for recall Mr Les. Stubbs (Caversham), Mr Reg. Richards (Dunedin), and Mr 11. Townrow (St. Kilda). ELOCUTION. Recitation, lady amateurs, ‘ The Cavalier’ (Scott). —All appeared, twenty-six in number, and Dir Bell selected for recall Mrs G. W. Callander (Dunedin), Miss_ Roberta Williams (Dunedin), and Miss Hilda Scnrr (Dunedin). Highly commended: Miss hi oily Randle. Miss Margaret Seclye, Miss Joyce Hould, Miss Rona Scott, Miss Nancve Low. DANCING. HIGHLAND FLING, Girls under 10. Iris W. Gordon (Dunedin), 93 ... 1 Elvra Connor (Ravensbourne). 89 2 Pat. Aitcheson (Dunedin), 83 3 This was judged outright. The markings of the unplaced wex-e as follow: Dorothy M'Millan 84, Daphne Bennett 84, Agues Brown 84, Peggy Black 9, Elsie Brown 8, Patricia. Wilson 6, Hazel Doran 76, Margaret M'Millan 75, Nora Steele 74, Jessie Baxter 73, Evelyn Williams 72, Lily Barnes 09, Nancy, Goodlet 68, P.cggy Steele 07, Mavis Connelly 63. Mr M‘Kechnio said that the dancing generally was weak in regard to position. 'The winner danced a very nice fling. Her positions were rigidly kept, but her deportment could bo slightly improved. The second prize winner danced very nicely, position fairly good, but cutting rather jerky. Third was fair as to positions, cutting rather low and wide at times. Irish Hornpipe, girls under 18.— Eight competed, only one withdrawn, and Mr M'Kechnie announced the recalls to bo Miss Lornn Budge (N.E. Valley), Miss Winifred Hooper (Cromwell), Miss Rbona Beale (Mosgiel), and Miss Cara Peterson (Dunedin). TO-NIGHT’S PROGRAMME. The festival will be officially opened this evening by Mr W. H. Mackenzie (president of the society). A very' interesting programme will follow, in-1 eluding ballet or group dancing, piano duets (‘Polonaifio in E Flat’), recitation (‘The Cavalier’), vocal solo (ladies, selection from light opera), fancy dance, piano solo (‘ Miniature Pastorale’), baritone solo (‘Ships of Yule’), Irish, hornpipe, recitation (‘Rome’), vocal solo (own selection), stop dancing, and Irish reel. Very interesting programmes have been arranged for all sessions tomorrow.
