CONCRETE HOUSES

Compact and economical small houses have been constructed in Australia lor some years, and Mr J. Ikin, writing in the Australian ‘ Horae Beautiful,’ gives some details of the advantages of the concrete structure. The complaint of damp walls in concrete buildings has been avoided by including a complete and unbroken cavity in the outside walls, so that no chance exists of wet penetrating to the inner walls of the house. At the same time the cavity assists in keeping an oven temperature internally. The effect of a rock-faced surface in the base and main pier shows how the material lends itself to decorative treatment. Concrete is very plastic by nature, and may readily be made to conform to any typo of architecture, and in capable hands most pleasing results may be obtained with variety of texture and color tones which arc now possible. . . . A good effect is also obtained by leaving the concrete blocks exposed above tbo dadoes, colored cream with a tuck-pointed joint of a paler shade. Combined with polished floor, artistic rugs, and light fittings, it leaves nothing to bo desired.
