CONCRETE POLES

POWER BO ADDS INTERESTED. Power boards Now Zealand arc watching with considerable interest the Marlborough Powbr Hoard’s experiment of concrete transmission poles which have boon erected throughout its area, (says an exchange), for this is the first time this material has been used for transmission poles on so largo u scale in the dominion. Some of the Marlborough poles have now been erected for about eighteen months, and have come, through two winters ot heavy frosts without sign of deterioration,' the board’s engineers, the workmen handling the poles, and the members of the board themselves being more than satisfied with the results. Just over <I,OOO concrete poles have now been erected of from 26ft to 40ft in length, and, apart from about a dozen “defectives” manufactured at 'the very outset of the work, not a single faulty pole has been discovered. The poles are of a graceful design, and their uniformity results in the reticulation lines assuming a workmanlike_ appearance, in marked contrast to the straggling and uneven linos which frequently result from the use of wooden poles. It is claimed that the poles are virtually indestructible, so that replacements are reduced to a minimum, and a further important factor is that at least a third of the cost was circulated, by, way of wages, in the district, whereas if wooden polos had been used some £43,000 would have had to be spent in , Australia.
