IRISH ELECTIONS

POLLING RESULTS ALL THE MINISTERS RETURNED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, September 13. Mr P. Hogan (Minister of Agriculture) and Professor J. M. O’Sullivan (Minister of Education) have been elected. All the Ministers have now been, returned. —A. and N.Z. and ‘Sun’ Cable. GOVERNMENT LEADS. LONDON, September 19'. At midnight the Government parties held 62 seats (Government 48, Indepeud -ts 10, Farmers 4) and the Opposition 56 (De Valerans 41, Laborites 15). The others are unchanged. REPUBLICAN PARTY. SURPRISING SUPPORT. LONDON, September IS. The Dublin correspondent of ‘The Times ’ says that the De Valerans have been far more successful than was expected. This is largely owing to the Roman Catholic Hierarchy’s complete silence concerning the oath. 11 the bishops had condemned Mr De Valera and-his followers for perjury when they entered the Dail, the De Valerans would now be a greatly reduced force. The absence of an episcopal announcement and the ignorance of the masses misled the latter regarding the Republicans’ propaganda. They decided that the silence meant approval. It is also obvious that those who had lost faith ui Sir Do Valera outnumbered. those who wore determined to vote for the Opposition at any cost. If a political crisis is precipitated, it must be settled by parliamentary means, as no party funds are available for further elections. Jt is clearly shown that the Free State has not yet reached the stage of political responsibility necessary for Proportional Rei presentation and the exercise of adult suffrage.— 1 The Times.’ DEAD LOCK PREDICTED. LONDON, September 19. Despite the diminution of the strength of tho small groups, there is every indication of the election resulting in a deadlock, as it is unlikely that the Government will have a majority of more than four or five over Fiaiina Fail. It is already hinted that the remedy is a working understanding between the two big parties. The election cost £160,000, and Ireland does not want another. Mr Osmond Gratton has been elected for Wexford.—A. and N.Z. and ‘ Sun ’ Cable. GOVERNMENT LEAD REDUCED. LONDON, September 19. (Received September 20, at 9.50 a.m.) Mr Hcnnigan and Mr J. Dolan were re-elected for Sligo. Mr P. M’Gilligan (Ministry for industry) headed the University pull, with Professor Tierney second. The Government has a lead of four over tho Republicans.—A. land N.Z. and ‘Sun’ Cable. TWENTY-THREE RETURNS TO COME. (British Official News.) Press Association—By Wireless—Copyright. RUGBY, September J 9. (Received September 20, at 11 a.m.) According to the results of tho Irish Free State election so far declared, the Government Party has a lead of threo over Mr Dc Valera’s party, and tho combined Government groups are also three ahead of the Opposition groups.
