PERSONAL. Captain Prosser, who has recently been in command ol the Tamaliinc and Maori, has taken charge, of the Maheno in plate ot Captain A. H. Davoy. . Mr M. J. Harr has joined the W airnna as fourth engineer, relieving Mr J. Longloy for holidays. Mr L. W. Williams, second engineer of the Wingatui, has gone on holiday leave, his place being taken by Mr J. C. Deer. Mr L. C. Salnon is now third engineer of the Wingatui. Mr J. Kettle is now chief engineer of the Wingatui, relieving Mr Hurt, who has retired from the company. ELECTRICALLY DRIVEN LINERS. The International Mercantile Marino Company’s 22,(KJU-ton passenger liner California, under construction at the yard of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, for the Panama-Pacific Line’s service between New York and Californian ports via the Panama Canal, will be launched on October 1. The California and her sister ship will be electrically driven, and will rank as the largest passenger liners in existence with this type ot drive. Their propelling machinery .will be similar to that in successful operation on lour of the largest battleships in the United States Navy. COR I NTH 1C FROM HOME. Norfolk, October 1, for Auckland, Hawke’s Hay, Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers. Cumberland, October 20, lor Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, or Port Chalmers and Bluff'. Huntingdon, November 12, for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers. Hertford, November 20, for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, and Now Plymouth. Special attention is drawn to the sailing of the Norfolk, Cumberland, and Hertford, which oiler opportunity for direct discharge, at Hawke’s Hay, Bluff, and New Plymouth respectively. PORT OF DANZIG. Since its establishment as a free port under the control of the League ot Nations, Danzig has become one of the great ports of the Baltic. When the European boundaries were rearranged after the war, Poland demanded a port on the Baltic, and Danzig was established under tho administration of the League. Although there arc many squabbles between conilicting authorities, the experiment has proved a success, and,flic latest report of the League states that the tonnage using tho port has increased by over 75 per cent. H.M.S. DIOMEDE UNDOCKED. 'The cruiser Diomede, which has been in dock at Auckland for six weeks overhauling and refitting, undocked on Friday morning. She is to on a cruise in .southern waters on Sep-, tember 30, visiting Dunedin, Lyttelton, Akaroa. and Wellington. She leaves Wellington on November 23 on the » - cturn trip to Auckland. THE EPSOM. Some days behind schedule, the steamer Epsom is not now expected to arrive at Auckland from Juan de Nova via South Island ports, until early next month. She was previously expected on September 22. THE MANUKA. The Union Company advises Unit the Manuka, from Melbourne, berthed at Wellington at 8.30 this morning. She is timed to leave there to-morrow a Iternoon for Lyttelton, Dunedin, Bluff, and Melbourne. The steamer is due hero on Friday, and is to sail the same evening. THE SUSSEX. Advice received from ilic Union Company is to the effect that tho Sussex was to leave Wellington to-day for Lyttcltoii, Dunedin, Timaru, and Bluff. The local portion of her cargo from Eastern ports will be discharged hero about September 27. DEV ON PORT WHARF GHA N N EL. The Auckland Harbor Board notifies that a special channel only will bo available for vessels using the Dovouport cargo wharf, which lies within the new .protected anchorage for yachts and launches, until the old wharf is removed. Tho channel is 100 ft wide, and extends from the outer end of the Devonporb cargo wharf in line with Bean flock light on a bearing of 97dcg for a distance of I,oooft. ft is marked on the northern side by two red barrel buoys and on the southern side by two blade barrel buoys.
