UNASSEMBLED MOTOR BODIES
THE TARIFF REMISSION WILL THROW ONE THIRD OF WORKERS OUT [BrZC!AL *0 THE STAB.’] CHRISTCHURCH, September 19. . A meeting of the Coachworkcrs’ Union was held on Saturday night to discuss the position that has arisen regarding the proposed alteration of the tariff on motor ears. It was stated that "if the new proposals come into force unite a third of the workers in the. motor building industry will be out of employment. At the present time there were about 2,500 workers in the industry in the dominion, and with reasonable protection a few years would sco more than double that number* employed. The chief objection to the new proposals was the remission of 5 per cent, on all unassembled bodies which, it was claimed, would allow American firms practically to monopolise the trade. _ It was decided to send a deputation to Wellington to place the views of the workers before the Minister.
