COUNSEL FOR ANTI-SALOOH LEAGUE WELL KNOWN IN AMERICA. NEW YORK, September 6. Warms B. Wheeler, counsel for the -\nti-Saloon League, of America, died recently at Battle Creek, Michigan, _ He was the pioneer of Prohibition' in* America, and was one of those mainly responsible for the passing of the Volstead law. Mr Wheeler was horn at Brookfield, Ohio, in 1869. and began temperance work while a law student. In the earlv days of the anti-Saloon League, Mr "Wheeler was associated with Mrs Carrie Nation, who to smash bar-rooms with a hatchet. After a time he quarrelled with her over her direct methods, and pinned his faith on the political action, such as intensive lobbying in Washington, which eventually carried the day. He has successfully prosecuted over 2,000 cases of violation of the saloon and prohibition laws, many of them going to -the United States Supreme Court. His wife was killed about three weekii ago by a mysterious bomb explosion in the kitchen of her home at Grand Rapids, Michigan, and her father subsequently died as a result of shock. .
