GRENFELL OF LABRADOR

KNIGHTHOOD CONFERRED THIRTY-FIVE YEARS’ LABORS. Royal recognition has been accorded the work of Dr W. T. Grenfell in Newfoundland and on the Labrador coast, the King having appointed him __ a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. Since his first visit to the Newfoundland and Labrador coasts thirty-live years ago Sir Wilfred Grenfell has devoted his life to the spiritual and material welfare ol the fisherfolk of those regions. _ Ho began his work as a medical missionary on board a small sa;ling hospital ship, and gradually widened the scope of nis activities until lour substantial hospitals, seven cottage hospitals, two orphanages, four public schools, and numerous other institutions along the northerly coast and in Labrador gave proof of his labors. The latest of the hospitals, at St. Anthony, Northern Newfoundland, which has cost £30,000. was opened last July. In addition there is his fishermen’s home in St. John’s. He has also raised, through lecture tours and gifts from friends interested in his work, an endowment fund of over £200,000 to ensure the continuance of his work when advancing years compel him to relinquish his Grenfell’s name is a household word throughout the northern region as that of an unselfish servant ol the needy and distressed. Each summer the United States and Canada supply hundreds of volunteer workers of both sexes who assist in all forms of work in his organisation. He himself is welcome ns a lecturer in every city across the continent.
