(Received September 16, at 11.12 a.m.) At the League of Nations Assembly, after tho result had been announced, M. Yandervelde, tho Belgian Foreign Minister, mounted tho tribune and said that ho was convinced that Belgium had been defeated only on a question of principle. There was, ho felt sure, no animosity shown by anyone, and he could assure them that Belgium would continue to collaborate with undiminished ardor in tho work for world peace, for which the League stood. He understood that the League Council in private session had decided to invite Belgium to remain a member of the Preparatory Commission for tho Disarmament Conference, despite the fact that Belgium had automatically ceased to bo a member, owing to her not being re-elected to the League Council. THE VOTING FIGURES. GENEVA, September 15. (Received September 16, at 11.40 a.m., The League Council election resulted as follows; — Cuba, 43 votes; Finland, 33; Canada, 26. Tho unsuccessful candidates were:— Greece, 23 votes; Portugal, 16; Uruguay, 3; Denmark, 2; Siam, 1; Switzerland, 1; Hnyti, 1. After the defeat of Belgium M. Vandervelde smilingly mounted tho tribunal and declared that he was certain tho vote was based on a question of principle, and was not directed against Belgium. M. Vandervelde added that Belgium would continue to co-operate wholeheartedly with the League in the interests of world peace. The League Council, in recognition of Belgium’s former services, is requesting that she retain a seat on the Preparatory Disarmament Commission.
