Mr A. Campbell, of Port Chalmers, has been appointed to a vacancy on the Port Chalmers Fire Board. The vacancy was in respect to tho Government representative, who recently had to retire as he was not eligible to hold the position because be was a fire insurance agent. , Air Edward Johnson, of Edinburgh, has accepted a position with the Dunedin Technical College as head instructor of the engineering department in nlaco of Mr M'Fadyen, who has left to become principal of the Timaru Technical School. Mr Johnson had considerable experience in munition work during the Great War, aud for the past three years has been in the chief draughtsman’s office of tho New South Wales Railways. Miss Helen Crawford has been appointed matron of the Palmerston Cottage Hospital. Mrs E. C. Tapley. who died at Dunedin yesterday afternoon, was tho mother of Mr H. L. Tapley (Duncdinl. Mr C. B. Tapley (Invercargill), and Mrs P. J. Priest (St. Chur). She was born in South Australia seventyone years ago, the daughter of Mr Daniel Brock, tho naturalist to Captain Sturt’s expedition, the members of which were tho pioneers of tho overland route from Adelaide to the Northern Territory. Her husband died in ISSG, and she came to Dunedin in 1890 with the remainder of her family to join Mr H. L. Tapley, who was already resident here. The funeral is to bo at Anderson’s Bay to-morrow morning. Mr J. R. Marks, tho District Engineer for the Public Works Department, has gone to Lawrence to inspect the damage done by the recent flood._ Mr G. A. Lewin, town clerk, is returning from Wellington this evening. Tho position of male attendant at the corporation tepid baths has been filled by the appointment of Mr W. S. Hindemarsh.

Mr Ernest M'Kinlay, the New Zealand tenor, who has made good in England, is preparing for a voyage to Dunedin to see his- people, and arrangements are already made to secure his services for ‘ The Messiah ’ at Dunedin and Wellington.
