YESTERDAY'S PARLIAMENT
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL Tiio Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill and Land and income Jax (Annual) Bill were read a second time, a third time, and passed. The Marriage Amendment bill was received from The House of Representatives and read a first time. The Council adjourned at >1.35 p.m. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Replying to Mr 11. M'Kecn (Wellington South), the Prime Munster said the public sendee classification list would be available next week. Sir Maui Pomaro (Acting-Minister of Internal Affairs), replying to Mr J. A. Nash (Palmerston North), who quoted the Gisborne magistrate’s remarks condemning the endorsement of a child’s birth certificate with the word “illegitimate,” said such endorsement was certainly undesirable. It was, in fact, not required in cases where a simple certificate of the date of birth was asked for. If. however, a full certificate were needed, then th endorsement had to appear as the law stood at present, and it was now recognised that this position should bo remedied bv amending the Registration Act. . .
When the report of the commission which inquired into the Dobson min« disaster was presented. Mr H. E. Holland (Leader of the Opposition) drew attention to the fact that the mine was very gassy and the steps taken to deal with tho coal dust were inadequate.—The Minister of Mines (Mr I*. J. Anderson) said the disaster was not due to the human element, though the actual cause would never ho known. Every care had been taken, and the report of the commission would assist in making tho precautionary measures even more effective. The Dobson mine management had been warned that stone-dusting should be provided, but to comply with this required time, and the explosion had intervened, and in the circumstances no punitive action had been taken against the mine management. 'The whole of the evening session was occupied with the debate on the third reading of the Summer Time Bill, which was carried by 29 votes to 14.
