OTAGO'S TWO NOMINEES MESSRS SHARP AND M'CLYMONT Tho Professorial Hoard of the Univeisity of Otago decided at its meeting last evening that Messrs 0. and W. G. M'Clymont, selected m that order, should be Otago's nominees tor Rhodes Scholarship honors. , Mr C. A. Sharp, 8.A., who is 20 years of age, is a native ot Dunedin. He graduated at tho Otago University last May. His scholastic career lias been most creditable. He was dux ol Ids primary school, and holds jiuiini national, John Williamson, and the University entrance scholarships. Ho attended the Auckland Grammar School for four years, and in 1924 filtered the Otago University. In 1925 Ik>_ was a member of the Executive Committee ol the University Debating Club ami Literary Societies. In IO2G lie became a member of the Arts Faculty Students Association, associate-editor of tbo ‘ Critic,’ president of the Literary Society, and secretary of the University Students’ Council, in 1927 ho became a member of tho Students’ Association Executive Committee, and a member of tho Lawn Tennis and Hockey Club Committees. He is at present reading for honors in English and Latin. In 1924 ho was first in his class for English, Latin, and French, gaining the James Clark prize for English. In 1925 ho was first in his class for English and Latin, and won the Bowen essay prize for an essay entitled ‘The Northern Territory of Australia.’ In 192(5 he was again first in his class for English and Latin, and he won tho Macmillan Brown essay prize, for au essay entitled ‘Am 1 My Brother’s Keeper?’ Ho tied for tho Otago University George Young scholarship, and won the University of New Zealand senior scholarship in English and Latin. His sporting activities have been mainly in hockey _ circles, and ho has played in University teams from 1924 to 1927, while in 1927 he was a member of tbo Otago team in tiie University tournament. lie is a lawn tennis player of considerable ability, and was a member of tbo winning pair in the 1927 Otago provincial doubles. Ho holds junior shooting and swimming prizes. Mr W. G. M'Clymont, M.A., is 22 years of age, and was born at Lawrence. He is a, trained teacher,'' and is assistant to Dr J. R. Elder, professor of history at the University. His scholastic career is also a meritorious one. and from 1918 lie held junior and senior national scholarships and higher leaving certificate. In 1922 he became a pupu teacher, and in 3024 he secniccl a trained teacher’s certificate. In 1922, at the Otago University, ho was first in the past degree history examination, and in 1924 secured his B.A. degree and senior University scholarship in history. In tho following year ho was _ equal for the James Clark prize in history, and graduated as a, Master ot Arts with first-class honors in history. In 1026 ho was appointed as assistant to Dr Elder. His athletic record is. a particularly outstanding one. At the Xokomairiro District High School he was the captain of the lirst fifteen and tho first cloven, in 1931 ho played senior cricket and football in South Otago. In 1924-25 he represented the Dunedin Training College at Rugby Football, and in 1926 was selected as a member of the Otago 13 team. Ho was chosen this season as a wing threequarter in tbo Otago representative team, but was unable to travel. He has been oiip of the most successful backs in the University A team this season, and by many good judges or the game is considered to be one of the finest all-round wing three-quarters in tho province. He was asked to take part in the Rugby Union trial match Otago, Southland, and North Otago V. Canterbury and South Canterbury. As a marksman his record is striking; in 1924 ho was chosen to compete in tho New Zealand Army rifle meeting at Trentham. In University activities ho has also been prominent. Ho was a member of the Art I 1 acuity Executive Committee in 1925, and was a member of the Students’ Council m 1926 and 11927. In 1926 he was an associate j editor of the 1 Critic.’ 1 his year lie 'edited the ‘Review.’
