EXPLOITING THE SHARK. LONDON, September 6. An American, Dr Ehrenreich, lias stated that after twenty-two years’ research he has perfected a secret process for curing shark hide. With the object of exploiting shark products ho has formed a company, which has acquired the steamer Istar (2,000 tons), formerly a yacht belonging to M. Goulet, a wealthy char, pagnemaker . Tho Istar has been converted into a floating factory for the treatment of sharks, and will bo used in conjunction with the former meat factory at Carnavou (W.A.) to develop tho industry. in which £300,000 has been invested. Only Australian labor, which will be trained aboard the Istar, will be used. Australian material employed will include pine solution for tanning. Dr Ehrenreich claims that the venture will revolutionise the leather industry. Shark hide produces the finest qualify leather winch can be dyed artistically. Portion of the intestines can be used to make the daintiest gloves, while one species of leather is sp closely scaled a? to be bullet-proof. There is no fear of a shortage of sharks, Dr F-hvenreich says, as it is officially estimated that 1,000,000 are horn daily, and that 5,000,000 pass the Great Barrier Reef daily.
