The President expressed satisfaction at tho successful year. The club’s net profit had been £6,435 12s 8d lor five meetings, an extra meeting having been granted for the American fleet’s visit. The balance from the previous year was £9,551 ISs Id, but a falling off in tho returns for last year was not unexpected, said Mr Harconrt. The stakes paid amounted to £38,610, compared with £43,900 in tho previous year. The taxes paid to the Government amounted to £41,583 5s lid. The totalisator receipts were £51,893 ISs 7d, compared with £61,197 19s 7d for 1926. The attendance of the public, except at the Autumn Meeting, showed an increase, and tli© support from owners and trainers ■ also increased. Tho sale of bloodstock at the January Meeting was a great success. The stewards were greatly pleased with tho work of the secretary, Mr Griffiths. Tho report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr J. B. Harcourt; vice-president, Mr O. S. Watkins; stewards—Dr Gilmer, Lieutenantcolonel H. J. M'Loan, and Messrs K. D. Duncan, M. M'Lcan, and E. L. Riddiford. CANTERBURY TURF NOTES. (Special to tub ‘ Stab.'] CHRISTCHURCH, September 15. The programme mapped out for Martarnia this season was_ to have been opened with tho Dunedin Guineas. E. Christmas is of opinion, however, that the Martian colt will he benefited by a race prior to tho classic event, and, after consulting with the owner (Mr ,1. Porter), it has been decided to start him in a seven-furlong hack race on the first day of tho Dunedin Meeting. Martarma is training on well, and he promises to develop into a really good racehorse. A. Cox is working a threc-ycar-old trotter filly by Sonoma Harvester from a mare by Wildmoor. She is engaged in tho New .Zealand Trotting Stakes to bo run at the Forbnry Park Club’s February Meeting this season. The trotter has not been long in work, and is not likely to bo at her best in the classic event. Her trainer stated recently, however, that some years ago, when he was training Rcta Peter and Marietta for the classic event the latter was very backward; but in the classic race, driven by E. C. M'Dermott, she finished second 1 o Swiftwcod, while Reta Peter was unplaced. Cox has had a lot oi: experience with trotters, especially young ones, and he has formed a high opinion of the Sonoma Harvester filly. Although she is so backward in the meantime, the youngster is going along well in her work. An unfortunate oversight occurred to-day, when Mr A. Anderson, owner of Jack Potts, failed to reach the offices of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club till three minutes past 12 o’clock, payment being cine at noon in connection' with the New Zealand Trotting Cup. The result is that duck Potts is erased from the_ list of candidates for the big event in November. LAWN TENNIS. ST. KILDA CLUB. At the annual meeting of the St. Kilda Lawn Tennis Club on Wednesday evening, Mr H. Chapman presided in the absence of tho president, Mr J. J. Marlow. Hall (Mayor of St. Kilda), and Messrs .Harris, Dawc, Tregear, and Chapman; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr J. H. Chapman; committee—Messrs B. Deakcr, C. Deakcr, Allan, and Patrick, Mrs Hewitt, and Misses Miller, Smith, Strothers; selector, Mr C. Dcaker; delegates to the association—Messrs Allan ami Dawe.
