The abandonment after lunch at the Oral of the last match of the season robbed the cricket world at the last moment of the chance of a now record. At lunch time Hammond was 53 not out, bringing bis season's total to 2.909. He only wanted 39 to become the youngest ever to score 3,000 in a season, and so join the select bandof tbreo thousanders, of whom Ranjitsinhji achieved distinction at the youngest age of twenty-six.
