BOYS AT SOCCER

AUSTRALIANS’ EASY WIN LESSON FOR OTAGO JUVENILES A lesson in trapping and placing was given juvenile Soccer enthusiasts of Otago by tho Australian schoolboy team when they played the home province on Carisbrook. The Australians were bigger boys, and had developed_ into a good combination by coaching and playing together; consequently they soon wore down the defence of the local boys, most of whom came from primary schools, and piled up a total of seven goals in the second spell. The match was productive of really pretty and interesting football, despite being so onesided. The attendance was about 1,500 and tho weather was perfect, though the sun bothered the Otago goalie. For Otago C. Croal, left half, and G. Sutherland, left full-back, were the outstanding players, but the best boy on the field was A. Follett, tho Australian centre forward. He was well supported by A. Dorsch and the halves, A. Hooper and N. Tillett. The teams were:— Otago.—Goal, A. Hall; full-backs—-,A. Alcorn, G. Sutherland (captain); halves—A. Damage, E. Quartorman, C; Croal; forwards—J. Hannah, H. Cameron, E. Lamb, H. Montgomery, and C. Patton. Australia.—Goal., R. Cheminant; full-backs—K. Campbrcll, G. Sullivan; halves —A. Hooper, N. Tillett, 11. Muller; forwards—K. Lnscombc, A. Mills, A. Follett, A Dorsch, J. Horsell. The initial rush was a nice passing movement by the Otago forwards, who had tho sun behind them A goal kick resulted, and a miss-kick by Damage let tho Greens through, Tillett making a long pass to Horsell, who centred to Follett. whoso kick went wide. In rapid succession .two attempts wore made by Follett to score, but Patton and Lamb combined in a breakaway hack to the Australian goal. The boys were playing fast and clever football, the visitors playing up to their shooting man. Follett evaded the Otago defence and crossed to Luscombe, whose kick went wide. After mid-field play, the _ local boys made a mistake by kicking down to the big Aussie fullbacks. However, Campbell failed to intercept a long kick, and Otago pressed, Cheminant came out of goal and fisted clear from a bunch, and then Patton kicked wide. Pretty passing was shown by the Australians, Horsell being the pivot of the movements, but both Luscombe and Follett failed to find the net. Follett raced away on his own, but Hall saved in good .style, and a minute later Luscombe sent in a nice kick, and Hall was fouled by Follett when clearing. Brief respite was given Otago; Lamb failing to complete a dash with a goal, a corner being conceded. Australia relieved and had most of the attacking, their placing being superior to tho passing of the BluCs. The Otago hoys, though, were bustling tlie bigger Australians, and Patton was only a foot or so wide with a shot after bo hud dribbled through. Then Montgomery bad the goalie in difficulties, the corner giving Australia relief. Even spells at attack were held until the end of the spell, when tho ■ scoring was unopened. Otago opened the second spell with a heavy rush, but the local hoys kicked widely before the goal month. A determined attack was set up by the Australians. Ultimately Horsell crossed to Follett, Alcorn failed to intercept, and the centre found the net with a high kick, Australia 1, Otago 0. A cross from Luscombe found Follett : handy. Hall listed clear, and Hannah i carried tho play to mid-field with a good dribble. However, the Australians were too assertive, and a pass from i Follett to Dorsch gave the inside left an easy shot, the goalie standing still as tho ball flew past. Australia 2, Otago 0. Tho home forwards began to place better, but the Australian fullbacks were too sound. Montgomery had a shot, which went and from tho resultant goal kick the \cllows advanced, and Follett again sent the ball past Hall into the net corner. Aus- ‘ I tralia ft. Otago 0. Strong defence by ‘ Campbi -11 held back tho Otago attack--1 ers, and the visitors raced back. Foli lett’s shot hit tho cross-bar, and Dorsch ' ran up to shoot a goal. Australia 4, Otago 0. Follett was proving himself a clashing scoring man, his next effort, a hard drive, hitting the cross-bar, bouncing back, and then going behind. Otago were hemmed in, and a corner from Horsell was headed over the bar by tho centre. The Otago boys wore tiring, and play was confined to their territory. Dorsch had a shot Irom well ■ out. and the ball glanced off Alcorn into I goal. Australia 5, Otago 0. Half a , ! minute later Follett received a pass ’ from Tillett and shot heavily, beating Hall. Australia 0, Otago n. Then , Mills crossed to Dorsch, who headed an | easy goal. Final: — Australia 7 Otago ... * 0 Mr W. Sudden was tho referee.
